Interview: JJ Jackson Does PiL

This post goes out to my friend the Nuzz Prowlin' Wolf!

Of all the Keith Levene-era Public Image Ltd interviews I've seen, this is the only one where the interviewer - JJ Jackson - holds his own and gets Lydon to talk.  I think after watching this, particularly the behind-the-scenes, pre-interview footage, you can see what an intelligent, laid-back guy JJ was (he died of a heart attack in 2004).  THIS is what Music Television could be - but unfortunately the format destroyed the music industry.  Listen from about 10:00 to 11:20 - that is a GREAT back and forth! Now, after that JJ gets a little disingenuous, but everything picks up again soon after.

If you ask me (and I don't care that you didn't), this is the best, most intelligent and honest interview MTV ever did.  Toward the end, Lydon even asks why there are no cameras on JJ!  Can you imagine MTV today not shoving the presenter in front of us like some whore for sale?!!!   RIP JJ!

Watch This Gig: The Misfits - Dearborn, MI (1983)

One of only two Danzig-era Misfits pro-shot shows.  This was a day show for the cable access TV program, Why Be Something You're Not filmed in a storage room at Group W Cable in Dearborn, Michigan.

Bootleg Time: Iggy & The Stooges - "WABX Sessions"

OK, enough of the politics and sports - let's get back to some music.  And what better way to rattle your eardrums than some of the Stooges rough studio demos?!

The Munich 11 Virtual Memorial

Tonight the London Games will kick off with a grandiose Opening Ceremony that has been nicknamed the "Isle of Wonder." But the three-hour event won't include a memorial to the Munich 11 due to the International Olympic Committee's staunch refusal to dedicate even ONE MINUTE OF SILENCE to honor the 11 Israeli athletes murdered at the Summer Olympics 40 years ago.

Joe Paterno: Scumbag and Lover Of Child Molesters

Sure, I helped keep a serial child molester from being caught!  Haa!!  Well, I am Joe Paterno and I can do whatever I want!  Fuck those kids!  Wait...Jerry Sandusky can go fuck those kids!!  Fuck you!  And now all those Penn State students and alumni that are crying are actually pissed at the NCAA instead of me!

I helped protect Jerry Sandusky and people still don't blame me!!  Can you believe that?

See the breaking glass
In the underpass

Warm leatherette

Hear the crushing steel
Feel the steering wheel
Hear the crushing steel
Feel the steering wheel

Warm leatherette

Melts on your burning flesh
You can see your reflection
In the luminescent dash

Warm leatherette

A tear of petrol
Is in your eye
The hand brake
Penetrates your thigh
Quick - Let's make love
Before you die

Watch This Film: Bleecker Bob's - For The Records

My friend Gavin over in the UK discovered this and sent me the link.  It's a very sad, and all too common story of our time - musical landmarks are being lost as a digital wasteland shoves on-your-corner record shops into the dirt.  Well...and insane NYC leases don't help much either, but you get my point.

The video won't embed here, so go to CAPITAL Online Magazine  and watch this short (30 minute) and very moving documentary.

When Bob Plotnik quit law to open up a record store in Greenwich Village in the '60s, the only thing he wanted was to get hold of his favorite street doo-wop records ahead of everyone else.

He couldn’t have known that the store would still be there nearly 50 years later—that it would survive the introduction of cassettes, CDs and MP3s, outlast CBGB, even stay open after Bob had a huge stroke and handed the store over to his colleagues to run.

And though "Bleecker Bob" is identified with some of the great names of rock and roll through the decades, and especially downtown movements from the Village's folk scene through punk, new wave and alternative music, now, time is finally catching up with the oldest record store in the Village.
There are cracks in the black and white linoleum floor. Dust gathers on Bob’s collection of art deco clocks, many of which have stopped. Though the landlord of their building on West Third Street has been good to Bob over the years, he’s finally putting the rent up in line with prices in the area. Bleecker Bob’s is getting priced out.

Bootleg Time: Lou Reed - Ludwigshafen 1977

This post was requested by a fellow Lou fan over at the Velvet Forum, and I'm happy to oblige!  Basically, I love everything Lou Reed recorded from the VU until 1979's The Bells.  After that it gets pretty spotty for me.  In 1978, near the end of that rather incredible 10+ year run of fantastic records and legendary personae, Lou released his edgiest and - to me - most exciting solo record, Street Hassle.  No simple studio record, Street Hassle took live concert performances recorded at several West German gigs (Wiesbaden, Munich, and Ludwigshafen) and wrapped studio recordings around them, forming a unique sound pallet.  Honestly, I've never heard another record that sounds like Street Hassle.

This bootleg is from that legendary Ludwigshafen show.  Pretty good cover-art, too, if I say so myself!

Watch This Movie: Jobriath A.D. (2011)

"The American Bowie," "The True Fairy of Rock & Roll," "Hype of the Year." Known as the first openly gay rock star, Jobriath's legacy delves deeper than the labels hung upon him. His reign was brief—two years and two albums. Sabotaged by a publicity machine run amok, shunned by the gay community and dismissed by critics, Jobriath was excommunicated from the music business, and became an early casualty of AIDS.

Now new generations of fans have discovered him through acts like The Pet Shop Boys, Joe Elliott of Def Leppard, Siouxsie Sioux, and Morrissey, all of whom cite Jobriath as a groundbreaking influence. Through interviews, archival material and animation, experience the heartbreaking, unbelievable story of the one, the only, Jobriath.
