Rest In Peace Davy Jones (The Monkees)

I was in high school when the Monkees suddenly experienced a revival - thanks to late-night reruns on MTV.  Though I wouldn't say they were a part of my childhood, I definitely remember watching those re-runs and enjoying the retro-ness of it all.

Congrats, You Get An AIDS!

Bootleg Time: Johnny Thunders - "Kitchen Concert"

A very simple 1981 (sometimes labeled as '82) acoustic performance on the NYC public access television show, "Paul Tschinkel's Inner Tube."  Elliot Kidd was in The Demons, the band Walter Lure played with prior to The Heartbreakers.  On the video, JT looks tired and worn, with a broken and rotting set of teeth.  1981/82 was when he was at his lowest if you ask me.

On the Punkdaddy blog, Tschinkel is quoted, "Tschinkel explains how he got a call from JT asking if he could come over with his friend and do a few songs for the show. They showed up and then disappeared into the bathroom for a while, to do their thing. When they emerged, loaded, they sang some songs."

This is sometimes known as the "Kitchen Concert," as the "studio" was actually some dude's apartment and you can see the stove in the background.  The sound is very good with just a bit of hiss.

JT does a great job, especially on the 4+ minute "Hurt Me."  Kidd is backing him up with solid guitar and gentle backing vocals.  Total Time is barely 15 minutes.

Rest In Peace Michael Davis (MC5)

Michael Davis, Wayne Kramer, Dennis "Machine Gun" Thompson
Michael Davis, bass player with US rock band MC5, has died of liver failure aged 68, his wife has announced.  Davis died at Enloe Medical Center in Chico, California, on Friday following a month of treatment for liver disease, said Angela Davis.

He was part of the MC5 line-up who rose to prominence with their blistering sound, epitomised by the 1969 track Kick Out the Jams.  Led by singer Rob Tyner, MC5 are widely regarded as pioneers of US punk rock.

Born on 5 June 1943, David replaced original bassist Pat Burrows when Tyner and lead guitarist Wayne Kramer decided they liked his style.  He went on to play on the Detroit band's debut album Kick Out The Jams, the title track with its inflammatory opening statement of intent going on to be one of their best known songs.

The group disbanded in 1972 but reformed in 2004 with singer Handsome Dick Manitoba replacing Tyner - who died in 1991.  Following a motorcycle crash in 2006, which left him with a serious back injury, Davis and his wife launched a non-profit organization to support music education in public schools.

A talented artist, Davis - who dropped out of art school when he joined the band - also collaborated on projects with the likes of street artist Shepard Fairey.

Davis is survived by his wife, their three sons, and a daughter from a previous marriage. Angela Davis said plans to announce a memorial were pending. - taken from www.BBC.com

How did Michael not stare at this chick's tits the entire interview?

Lost Sci Fi LP - "Music For Robots" (1964)

Science Fiction Records, MFR-1001A, 1964

I grabbed this recording from the incredible - but pretty much defunct - blog, Scar Stuff.  There have only been a couple posts over the last couple years, but before that Jason updated his blog regularly with obscure Sci-Fi and horror LPs, photos, punk flyers, and more.  Jason appears to be about 5 years older than me, but it looks to me like we grew up in similar Midwestern America cities.  Download this recording and head over to Scar Stuff for more HORROR!!

Today's Vinyl Purchase: Robert Gordon/Link Wray - "Fresh Fish Special"

Elvis Presley, the first great rockabilly, died only a few months after Robert Gordon cut his debut album, and Gordon paid tribute to the Fallen King on his second LP -- Fresh Fish Special was named for the ugly haircut inflicted upon Elvis in the movie Jailhouse Rock, Gordon covers one of the lesser known tunes from the flick, "I Want to Be Free," on this set, and the Jordanaires add backing vocals on five cuts. Otherwise, Fresh Fish Special doesn't stray especially far from the sound or direction of Gordon's debut. Link Wray returns as Gordon's lead guitarist, and as on the first LP he's in fine form, though he doesn't get to offer up as tough a sound as one might wish (many of the tunes are too low-key to carry the full weight of Wray's full-on guitar attack). Gordon's band sounds more comfortable their second time out, generating a bit more swing than before, and while the songs are mostly vintage covers again, the selection is a bit more imaginative (making room for the New Orleans classic "Sea Cruise" was a nice idea), and whoever brought Bruce Springsteen's then-unreleased "Fire" to Gordon deserved a bonus. As for Gordon, he's in great voice here, and has shaken a bit of the operatic melodrama that slowed down the second half of his debut, though he still comes off more as an enthusiastic interpreter than a musician with a vision of his own. Still, there weren't that many American-born rock & rollers who were willing to fly the flag for rockabilly at end of the '70s, and if other acts would surpass Gordon in imagination and impact a few years on, he certainly gets an 'A' for effort, and there's some real fun to be had on Fresh Fish Special. - Allmusic.com

Record Messages: Wings Over Pasmore

Andrea, why did you sign your name right on Paul's head!  He seems to be pretty stunned you'd do such a thing!!  I found this at the Record & Tape Xchange in Fairfax, VA.

Record Messages: Sherry Van Gorder "Hearts" Frampton?

Sherry, I have a question for you.  Did you buy this LP back in '77 or so because Frampton was (is) an incredible guitarist, or because you thought he was such a cutie back then?!  These are the questions people want answered!

The Cannonball Run (or, "Am I THAT Old?!)

I watched this for the first time in about 20 years and couldn't believe how many of the actors are now dead!  I was about 9 when it was released, but caught it on pay cable in the mid-80s.  Back then, all of these actors were popular and a huge part of popular culture.  However, in 2012 most of them are unknowns.  Ask a high school kid who Adrienne Barbeau is and I guarantee you'll get nothing more than a shoulder shrug!

DEAD
Dom DeLuise
Farrah Fawcett
Sammy Davis Jr.
Dean Martin
Bert Convy

These guys were all pretty well known in the 80s (and beyond), but that they were all in a movie I watched as a kid and are now all dead really makes me feel like an old fuck!
